Tsunami

Over 40,500 bodies recovered, over 1,000 are still missing, nearly 20,000 people have suffered injuries and around 1 million people have been affected on 26th December 2004 by Tsunami waves in Sri Lanka.
  • In Ampara district - 13,650 bodies recovered and over 250 are still missing

  • In Mullitivu & Killinochchi district - 3150 bodies recovered and over 200 are still missing

  • In Jaffna Vadamaradchy East district - 2800 bodies recovered and over 50 are still missing

  • In Batticaloa district - 2450 bodies recovered and over 100 are still missing

  • In Trincomalle district - 1250 bodies recovered and over 50 are still missing

  • In Galle district - 4550 bodies recovered and over 200 are still missing

  • In Matara district - 1450 bodies recovered and over 50 are still missing

  • In Hambantota district - 4875 bodies recovered and over 100 are still missing

  • In Colombo district - 75 bodies recovered and over 5 are still missing

The phenomenon we call a tsunami (soo-NAH-mee) is a series of waves of extremely long wave length and long period generated in a body of water by an impulsive disturbance that displaces the water.
